Spyderco UK Penknife

Different Versions | Current 2022 versions of UK Penknife

The original UK Penknife manufactured in 2004, measured 4 inches closed. Featuring 2.9 inch, flat grind , CPM-S30V steel, non locking blade, with 12 mm diameter thumb hole. Handle was made of 3 mm thick G-10 with side changeable, wire pocket clip. Made in Golden, Colorado, U.S.A. with custom torx screw fixings and full length back-spring. Although it is a slipjoint knife (non locking folding blade knife), the blade requires considerable force to close from the fully open position. This is due to the notched heel of the blade tang which engages with the top of the spring. Another notch creates a halfway safety stop when closing the blade.

This is as close to a locking blade in a slipjoint knife you can find. It is safe to open and close the blade with one hand. This makes it an ideal knife for fishing, hiking, camping, DIY etc. The blade steel is 3 mm thick American CPM-S30V, top quality expensive knife steel making this an expensive knife. Priced in excess of £100 it is a highly engineered tool which has no restrictions on carrying in public.

This G10 handle version of the UKPK was discontinued and replaced with the Lightweight FRN model. This has a 2.5 mm thick Carpenter steel blade. A choice of blue, black, grey or maroon handle colours was available.

Early production of the UKPK FRN model used Japanese GIN-1 steel blades. This was replaced with Carpenter Technology's CTS-BD1 steel. This is said to be an improved version of GIN-1 steel with added vanadium for toughness and edge retention. The design of the knife is unchanged with hollow sabre grind 2.5 mm thick blade. The new steel has a slightly matte, brushed appearance, in contrast to the shiny high gloss finish of GIN-1 steel.

In 2011, FRN models were fitted with a new, two-pronged spring, making the knife slightly harder to close. In 2012, the blade was changed to a full flat grind blade and the blade spring was further improved. Current versions of UK Penknife are black handle FRN models with CTS-BD1 steel blade and either leaf shape of drop-point blade. The dark blue handle version is fitted with premium CPM-S110V steel, leaf shape blade.
